Black Dog Hill Cycle/Footbridge, Calne, Wiltshire
The bridge design was based on a 40 metres long (span) x 2.10 metres wide ‘Kerto’ plywood deck (cycle/walkway) and the main 675 x 675mm glulaminated timber beam which acts as a compressive arch. The rocker beams, fixed under the deck, tied to the main beam (arch) by cables, reduced and stabilised the torsional forces. The unique and innovative design of the bridge led to an extremely complex erection procedure. Careful planning and design of the temporary works structures were of paramount importance.
